Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Dodge Charger have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The BMW M5 doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

Both the Charger and the M5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Charger 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW covers the M5. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the M5 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 7 times as many Dodge dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Charger’s warranty.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Dodge Charger higher (10 out of 10) than the BMW M5 (4). This means the Charger produces up to 25 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the M5 every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

The Charger stops shorter than the M5:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the M5 (F:305/35R20 & R:325/35R20 vs. F:285/40R20 & R:295/35R21).

The Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the M5’s 40 series front tires.

The Charger has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The M5 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Charger’s wheelbase is 2.7 inches longer than on the M5 (121 inches vs. 118.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Charger is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 2.9 inches wider in the rear than the track on the M5.

For better maneuverability, the Charger Coupe’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the M5’s (40 feet vs. 41.3 feet).

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Charger a Large car, while the M5 Sedan is rated a Mid-size.

The Charger has 5.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the M5 (103.1 vs. 98).

The Charger has 1.3 inches more front legroom, .3 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear legroom and .7 inches more rear shoulder room than the M5.

Cargo Capacity

The Charger Coupe has a much larger trunk with its rear seat up than the M5 (22.7 vs. 16.5 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Charger to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The M5 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Charger has standard extendable sun visors. The M5 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Recommendations

The Dodge Charger outsold the BMW 5 Series by over two to one during 2024.
